Hyaluronic acid is broadly compatible with most cosmetic actives, humectants, and emollients. It can form complexes with cationic ingredients at high concentrations, potentially causing precipitation or reduced efficacy. At very low pH (below 4) or very high pH (above 8), the polymer can undergo hydrolytic degradation, shortening chain length and reducing viscosity-building performance.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan capable of binding up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an exceptionally effective humectant for skin hydration and plumping. Formulators use it across a wide range of molecular weights — high MW forms a film on the skin surface for immediate smoothing, while low MW and enzymatically fragmented forms penetrate more deeply. It is generally well tolerated and considered safe at cosmetic use levels, though product pH should be controlled to prevent chain degradation during storage.
