Can you use Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream with retinol?

By Blake Mereby · Last reviewed September 5, 2026

Yes, and it is actually a particularly good pairing — with some caveats about timing and layering.

Retinoids (which include retinol, retinaldehyde, and prescription retinoids like tretinoin) accelerate skin cell turnover, which over time visibly reduces fine lines, evens tone, and thickens the dermis. Their most common side effects — dryness, flaking, and irritation, collectively called retinization — are largely a barrier disruption problem. The skin's lipid matrix is temporarily compromised while it adjusts to accelerated turnover. A rich occlusive moisturizer addresses exactly that problem.

The sandwich method — applying a layer of moisturizer before your retinoid, then another after — is a legitimate technique for reducing retinoid irritation without completely blocking its effect. The Rich Cream, because of its shea-butter base, is substantial enough to provide meaningful buffering as either the before or after layer. If you are new to retinoids or are building tolerance, using The Rich Cream as a post-retinoid seal is a practical approach.

Layering order matters. Apply your retinoid to clean, dry skin (or slightly damp skin if you are diluting it), wait for it to absorb — typically 10 to 20 minutes — and then apply The Rich Cream over the top. Do not mix the retinoid into the cream; that changes the delivery and unpredictably dilutes the concentration.

A note on timing: retinoids are generally used at night because some (particularly vitamin C in certain forms) degrade in UV exposure, and because the skin's renewal cycle is more active during sleep. The Rich Cream is also predominantly an evening product for most skin types. This makes them natural companions in a nighttime routine.

What to avoid: do not apply a retinoid over The Rich Cream rather than under it. The occlusive layer will trap the retinoid against the skin at an elevated effective concentration and significantly increase irritation risk. Always apply actives to skin that has not yet been occluded.

If you are using a prescription-strength retinoid for a clinical purpose, ask your dermatologist before adding any new product — including a luxury moisturizer — to your routine. For over-the-counter retinol, the pairing with The Rich Cream is generally well-tolerated and sensible.
